ASEM Workshop on Community-Level Actions for Global Environmental Agenda and Open ASEM Panel Discussion on "The Role of Local Governments in Building a Sound Material-Cycle Society"
February 3, 2006
- In cooperation with the Government of Sweden and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold an ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Workshop on Community-Level Actions for Global Environmental Agenda from February 27 (Mon) to March 3 (Fri) in Tokyo.
- At the ASEM Workshop, environmental policy experts from the governments and the local authorities in ASEM countries will exchange views on how to build a sound material-cycle society through the promotion of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) Initiative, and also on the role of local governments in curbing global warming. The participants will also visit Kawagoe and Yorii in Saitama Prefecture.
- At the Seventh ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Kyoto in May last year, Japan and Sweden jointly proposed the holding of the Workshop. It is expected to contribute to the development of substantive Asia-Europe cooperation in the field of sustainable development (including environment and energy security).
- In parallel with the ASEM Workshop, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Government of Sweden and JICA, will hold an Open ASEM Panel Discussion in the afternoon of February 27 (Mon) at the JICA Institute for International Cooperation in Ichigaya, Tokyo. The panel discussion is open to the public. It is expected that many people both from the private and government sectors including environmental experts of local authorities will attend the panel discussion along with the overseas participants in the Workshop.
