Jakarta Regional Seminar on Illicit Trafficking in Small Arms and Light Weapons

- The Jakarta Regional Seminar on Illicit Trafficking in Small Arms and Light Weapons, co-sponsored by the Government of Japan, the Government of Indonesia and the UN Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, will be held on May 3 (Wed) and 4 (Thu) in Jakarta.
- This Seminar will be attended by the 10 ASEAN countries. China, Pakistan and the ROK will attend as observers. From Japan, Ambassador Norio Hattori, Director-General for Arms Control and Scientific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will attend as one of the hosts to deliver an opening speech, and Ambassador Mitsuro Donowaki, Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, will give a lecture as a former chairman of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on Small Arms.
- At the Seminar, participants will exchange information and views on multilateral cooperation for the reduction of illicit trafficking of small arms, on measures against the problem of small arms in Europe, Latin America, Africa and other regions, and also deliberate on the preparations for a Small Arms Conference which will be hosted by the UN next year.
- The forthcoming Seminar will provide an opportunity to discuss for the first time regional cooperation on the small arms issue in the Asian region. The outcome of this Seminar will be reported at the Asian Regional Workshop on Small Arms, which Japan will host on June 8 and 9 in Tokyo.
