State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Ichita Yamamoto to Attend the 2000 NPT Review Conference

- Mr. Ichita Yamamoto, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, will visit New York from April 24 (Mon) to 29 (Sat) to attend the 2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) starting on April 24.
- Mr. Yamamoto will make a statement on April 24 as the representative of the Government of Japan at the plenary meeting of the Review Conference.
- During his stay in New York, Mr. Yamamoto will also attend the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, 8th Session, and the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Informal Ministerial Consultations after attending the Review Conference, and taking this opportunity, will exchange views on U.N. reforms and other matters with resident representatives of other countries.
- The 2000 NPT Review Conference is extremely important, as the future of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime will depend upon its results; it is the first conference since the decision on the indefinite extension of NPT in 1995, and is being held at a time when the international situation surrounding nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation is severe. The Government of Japan will do its utmost, including making concrete proposals about further measures for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, to lead the Conference to a successful end by issuing a positive message for the future.
