Statement by Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Adoption of a Resolution by the United Nations Security Council on the Nuclear Test conducted by North Korea

Japan highly appreciates the unanimous adoption by the United Nations Security Council of the resolution 2094, March 7, New York (March 8, Japan Time).
The nuclear test by North Korea is deeply deplorable, despite the United Nations Security Council resolution 2087, adopted upon the launch of the missile by North Korea on December 12, 2012, clearly expressed its determination to take significant action and warned in the event of a further North Korea nuclear test. Japan has been working toward a firm response by the Security Council, in close coordination with the United States, the Republic of Korea (ROK), China, Russia and other countries concerned at various levels. Japan welcomes that such efforts resulted in the adoption of the Security Council resolution.
Resolution 2094 recognizes this nuclear test as a violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, condemns it, and encompasses comprehensive and robust measures including adding and strengthening sanctions. Japan will, in coordination with other countries, take appropriate measures so that the resolution will be implemented effectively.
Japan strongly urges North Korea to sincerely heed the strong warning and condemnation repeatedly expressed by the international community and to comply faithfully and fully with the present and other relevant Security Council resolutions.
Japan is resolved to continue to make active efforts, in close coordination with the international community, for the comprehensive resolution of outstanding issues of concern regarding North Korea, including abductions, nuclear and missile issues.
