On February 7 (Thu), Judge Shunji Yanai, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), paid a courtesy call on Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Fumio Kishida, for about 10 minutes from 6:20 p.m. The outline of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, President Yanai briefed Minister Kishida on ITLOS’s recent work and expressed his gratitude toward the Government of Japan for its support and contribution to ITLOS.
- Minister Kishida expressed that the Government of Japan highly appreciated the important role played by ITLOS for the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes as well as for the maintenance and development of legal order in the oceans. Minister Kishida further stated that Japan would continue to provide its support to ITLOS with a view to promoting the rule of law in the international community.

- - ITLOS was established in 1996 in Hamburg, Germany. Judge Shunji Yanai (former Japanese Ambassador to the United States) has been serving as a Judge of ITLOS from 2005 and as President since 2011.
- - To this date, Japan has become a party to three cases brought before the Tribunal (Southern Bluefin Tuna Cases, the "Hoshinmaru" Case, and the "Tomimaru" Case).
