Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Election of the Next Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)

- The Government of Japan welcomes the election of Ms. Naoko Ishii, Deputy Vice Minister of Finance, whom Japan fielded as a candidate for the next Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), at the GEF Council held in Washington on Friday, June 8 (Thursday, June 7 local time).
- The GEF is a multilateral fund established to implement various projects concerning climate change, biodiversity conservation, and other issues related to the environmental field in developing countries. It is an important organization for the cooperation undertaken by the Government of Japan in the field of the global environment.
- The Government of Japan expects that Ms. Ishii will contribute to the solution of global environmental issues utilizing her rich experience in the development, finance, and environmental fields. The Government of Japan will continue to support the activities of the organization.
