On Friday, March 2, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Dr. Jafar Hassan, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, for about 20 minutes from 3 pm. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Bilateral Relationship
    (1) Minister Gemba welcomed Minister Hassan's visit to Japan following his last visit in June 2011. Minister Gemba mentioned a visit by Mr. Ryuji Yamane, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, to Jordan in January and stated that he was pleased that the government officials of the two countries actively visited each other for the further enhancement of the bilateral relationship, which has always been good. In addition, Minister Gemba expressed his gratitude for the dispatch of a medical support team from Jordan in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Furthermore, Minister Gemba stated that he knew of H.M. King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein's wish to visit Japan and would like to prepare for the visit as soon as possible when the visit is decided.

    (2) In response, Minister Hassan stated that he received directions from H.M. King Abdullah to always maintain and strengthen the relationship with Japan. He also remarked that all of the Jordanian people highly appreciated Japan's consistent support of Jordan.

  2. Situation in Jordan and Economic Cooperation
    (1) Minister Hassan stated that Jordan aims to become a model for its region and is making various efforts for democratization, such as the revision of the constitution and local assembly elections. On the other hand, Minister Hassan stated, due to the effects of the unstable conditions in the region, the economic conditions of Jordan were very severe and therefore support from friendly nations including Japan was expected.

    (2) In response, Minister Gemba stated that a politically stable Jordan is important for the surrounding nations and the whole region and expressed his expectations that the currently on-going reforms would steadily advance and bring results. Furthermore, Minister Gemba mentioned recent support to Jordan from Japan and expressed the intention to keep supporting Jordan.
