On November 13 from 6:20 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Her Excellency, Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women, who is visiting Japan. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the start of the meeting, Minister Gemba welcomed Executive Director Bachelet’s visit to Japan, and praised the steady results achieved by UN Women under the leadership of Executive Director Bachelet in the midst of the mainstreaming of women and gender issues in the international arena.In response, Executive Director Bachelet expressed gratitude for the political and financial support offered to UN Women by Japan, and praised efforts by the Japanese Government to promote considerations for gender particularly within the field of disaster prevention.


  2. In addition, Executive Director Bachelet stated that women play an important role for peace and security, and commended Japan’s efforts for the peace process in South Sudan. Furthermore, she expressed gratitude for support from Japan related to the elimination of violence against women in Afghanistan. Minister Gemba and Executive Director Bachelet shared the view that there was a need to continue initiatives in cooperation with the international society to raise the status of women in Afghanistan.
