  1. On May 27, the Government of Japan provides its financial contribution of approximately 64 million USD (approximately 6 billion JPY) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (henceforth referred to as the “Global Fund"). Together with 183 million USD provided in March 2010, Japan’s contribution to the Global Fund in 2010 reaches 247 million USD, completing the pledge of 240 million USD for this year announced by Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the occasion of the 2nd TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting in Tanzania on 2 May. Since 2009, Japan has already disbursed 441 million USD out of 560 million USD it pledged in May 2008.

  2. The three major infectious diseases take the lives of approximately 4 million people every year, and also hamper the economic and social development in developing countries. To address this challenge, the Global Fund was established in January 2002, as a result of the G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit. Since then, it has been playing a critical role in global health, as a funding agency which supports the developing countries to fight three major infectious diseases. The Global Fund has saved 4.9 million lives by the end of 2009.

  3. In order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, Japan attaches importance to the fight against the three major infectious diseases through the Global Fund. It is expected that Japan’s contribution will support the developing countries to further accelerate their efforts to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
