Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Announcement of the Next Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

  1. On May 18 (May 17 local time), it was announced that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moom has appointed Ms. Christiana Figueres, senior climate change advisor of Costa Rica, as the next Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

  2. Ms. Figueres has dealt with climate change issues for a long period of time, and possesses deep insight with respect to these issues. The Government of Japan sincerely welcomes her appointment.

  3. The Government of Japan is determined to cooperate with Ms. Figueres in order to promote climate change negotiations and continue working towards the establishment of a fair and effective international framework by all major economies.
