  1. On the night of October 25 (Mon), a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in waters off the Mentawai Island group, West Sumatra Province, triggering tsunami and resulting in heavy casualties, displacing many people and causing heavy damage.

  2. Also On the evening of October 26 (Tue), Mt. Merapi (altitude 2,968 meters) on central Java Island erupted, causing heavy casualties and displacing many people.

  3. In response to the disasters, on October 27 (Wed), Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Minister for Foreign Affairs Seiji Maehara sent messages to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa of Indonesia, respectively, expressing their condolences and sympathy for the lost lives and damage caused by the disasters and stating that Japan would extend necessary support to Indonesia.
