Emergency Aid for Typhoon Disaster in Taiwan

  1. The Government of Japan had previously announced that it had decided to extend emergency grant aid of 10 million JPY through the Interchange Association to the Taiwan side, which has suffered serious damage from Typhoon Morakot including many people who were killed and injured. However, from a humanitarian viewpoint, considering the increasing scope of damages the Government of Japan has decided to extend an additional total of up to 100 million JPY in emergency assistance.
     
  2. Specifically, on August 17 the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency grant aid of 50 million yen. In addition, a reconnaissance team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be dispatched to Taiwan on August 18 to gain an accurate understanding of needs in Taiwan and to exchange views with the authorities concerned. Based on their report, the dispatch of a specialist team to Taiwan and the provision of emergency relief goods will be considered.
