Emergency Grant Aid for the Electoral Process in the Republic of Guinea
June 19, 2009
Japanese
- On June 19, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency grant
aid totaling 1.83 million dollars (about 188.5 million yen) through the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which manages the trust fund
for the general election and the presidential election in the Republic of
Guinea, for the purpose of supporting fair and smooth implementation of
these elections. In the Republic of Guinea, the interim military “government”
seized power in late December 2008. After the consultations with a wide
range of the public, it has been decided to carry out these elections.
- The assistance from the Government of Japan will be used for the procurement
of materials necessary for these elections (i.e., ballot boxes, materials
for polling stations).
- At the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) held in Yokohama in last May, the Government of Japan stated that “ensuring human security,” including the consolidation of peace and the promotion of good governance and achievement of the MDGs, is one of the three pillars in its development assistance for Africa. This emergency grant aid is expected to contribute further to the promotion of good governance in Africa.
