- The first round of negotiations to conclude a Japan-Russia Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy was held on April 26 (Thu) in Tokyo. This round was attended from the Japanese side by: Mr. Takeshi Nakane, Director-General of the Disarmament, Non-proliferation and Scientific Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Head of the Japanese Delegation) and officials concerned from relevant ministries; and from the Russian side by: Mr. Vladimir Kuchinov, Head of the Department of International and External Economic Cooperation, Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (Head of the Russian Delegation) and officials concerned.
- Discussions were held on how to conduct talks in this round as well as in the future, and on the content of the Agreement, which is aimed at promoting cooperation between Japan and Russia on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
- The two sides have decided to aim at holding the next round around June in Moscow and to set the concrete dates through the diplomatic channel.
