Japan-Zambia Relations

On August 20, commencing at 5:20p.m., for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Her Honour Mrs. Mutale Nalumango, Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, who is visiting Japan to participate in the in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA reiterated his appreciation for President Hichilema's visit to Japan in February this year and expressed his desire to hold a Japan-Zambia policy dialogue to promote cooperation in various fields as an important like-mined country. In response, Vice President Nalumango stated that she would like to further develop the long-standing and positive bilateral relationship into a more strategic one.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA referred to the decision to launch the region-wide co-creation for common good agenda initiative covering the Nacala Corridor region, including Zambia, and stated his desire to support for the development of transportation infrastructure and industrial promotion in the surrounding areas. Prime Minister ISHIBA also expressed his intention to promote cooperation in the field of mineral resources, while mentioning the high level of interest of Japanese companies investing in Zambia. In response, Vice President Nalumango welcomed the launch of the region-wide co-creation for common good agenda initiative covering the Nacala Corridor and both leaders confirmed to cooperate on the development of the Nacala Corridor.
  3. The two leaders also concurred to further strengthen cooperation in responding to various international challenges.
