Japan-Republic of South Africa Relations

On March 18, commencing at 10:50 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary, held a meeting with the Honourable Mr. Paul Mashatile, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, who is visiting Japan upon the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi welcomed the visit by Deputy President Mashatile and his delegation to Japan this year, on the occasion of South Africa's G20 presidency, Japan's hosting of TICAD 9, and the 115th anniversary of Japan-South Africa relations. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi also expressed his pleasure to see the active high-level visits between the two countries and the deepening of Japan-South African cooperation in a wide range of areas both on the public and private level.In response, Deputy President Mashatile expressed his appreciation to visit Japan and his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations in a wide range of areas.
  2. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi expressed his desire for continued cooperation between the two countries towards a realistic energy transition without compromising energy security. He also requested continued support to develop business environment in enabling stable operations for Japanese companies in South Africa. In response, Deputy President Mashatile thanked Japan for its cooperation in the renewable energy sector among others, and expressed his expectations for the further strengthening collaboration towards the decarbonization of South Africa and increased investment from Japanese companies.
