December 13, 2023
On December 13, commencing at 3:45 p.m. (local time) for approximately 20 minutes, KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Switzerland for the Global Refugee Forum 2023, paid a courtesy call on Rt.Hon. Ms. Robinah NABBANJA, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that she would like to further develop the good bilateral relations and strengthen ties with Uganda, which is actively contributing to peace and stability in the international community, including by receiving many refugees from neighbouring countries, as the international situation becomes even more complex and challenging. In response, Prime Minister Nabbanja stated that she would like to further strengthen the good relations between the two countries.
- Minister Kamikawa stated that she is concerned that the capacity of refugeeaccepting countries around the world is reaching its limits due to the increase in the number of refugees and displaced persons in the world and their prolonged displacement, and that Japan would promote efforts to reduce the burden on refugee-accepting countries, including Uganda. Minister Kamikawa also stated that Japan would like to further promote Japan-led Humanitarian, Development and Peace Nexus (HDP Nexus), using initiatives such as rice farming assistance in Uganda as a good practice. In response, Prime Minister Nabbanja stated that she would like to continue to cooperate in promoting the HDP nexus. They confirmed that they would work closely together to improve the global humanitarian situation as co-convener of the Global Refugee Forum 2023.
- In addition, they exchanged views on responses to food security in Africa and confirmed that they would continue to work closely together.
