Japan-Eswatini Relations

On August 21, commencing at 2:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with His Majesty King Mswati III, King of the Kingdom of Eswatini, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA, referring to King Mswati III's sixth participation in TICAD, expressed his gratitude for his involvement in TICAD for more than a quarter of a century and stated his desire to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries, emphasizing their respective traditions, heritages, and unique cultures. In response, King Mswati III commended Japan’s efforts through TICAD which bridges Japan and Africa and expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relationship including trade relationship, while explaining the challenges facing Eswatini, including education, health and energy.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA referred to the issues Japan is facing and introduced the decision to provide food assistance in light of the worsening food insecurity caused by drought and other factors. Prime Minister ISHIBA also stated that Japan would continue to support the capacity building of young people through human resource development assistance. In response, King Mswati III expressed his gratitude for Japan’s assistance.
  3. The two leaders confirmed to work together in responding to various international challenges.
