Japan-Mauritania Relations
Japan-Mauritania Summit Meeting

On August 20, commencing at 11:55a.m., for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mohamed Ould CHEIKH EL GHAZOUANI, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, who is visiting Japan to participate in the in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA, referring to the import of octopus from Mauritania, stated that he would like to develop bilateral relations with Mauritania, which is located at the crossroads of people and goods and is key to the stability of the West African region, in a wide range of fields including the economic sector. In response, President Ghazouani stated that he highly appreciated Japan's efforts in TICAD to date and that he would like to further strengthen the bilateral relations, which he was proud of.
- Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA congratulated Dr. Tah on his election as the next president of the African Development Bank. He also mentioned the importance of strengthening industrial capabilities in collaboration with the private sector, expressing his hope that Japan's advanced technologies would be much utilized. Prime Minister ISHIBA also expressed his respect for Mauritania's efforts to stabilize the West African region, including the acceptance of refugees, and stated his intention to contribute to strengthening Mauritania's stability through support for refugees and host communities. In response, President Ghazouani expressed gratitude for Japan’s support and explained the efforts by Mauritania toward the stability of the region.
- The two leaders also confirmed that the two countries would work together on the stability of the region.
