Japan-Mozambique Relations

On December 10, commencing at around 9:00 a.m. (local time; 4:00 p.m. JST) for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting Mozambique, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique. The overview is as follows.

  1. President Nyusi welcomed Minister Motegi’s first visit to Mozambique and stated that he hoped to take this opportunity to further strengthen Japan-Mozambique relations. Minister Motegi stated that he would like to further deepen bilateral relations, which have enjoyed long years of friendship based on cooperation in various fields.
  2. Responding to President Nyusi’s high expectations for further Japanese companies’ presence in Mozambique, Minister Motegi informed that he planned to dispatch a Public-Private Sector Joint Mission in February 2021. President Nyusi welcomed Minister’s consideration. Both sides shared views on the importance of the Nacala Port development, on which both Japanese public and private sectors have cooperated. President Nyusi stated that he welcomed further investment by Japanese companies. Minister Motegi requested further efforts by the Government of Mozambique to improve the security situation in the Cabo Delgado Province, In response, President Nyusi stated the government would strengthen its security measures in the Province.
  3. To achieve a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” Minister Motegi expressed his hope for close cooperation with Mozambique, and to contribute to regional peace and security through capacity building of maritime law enforcement. Both sides confirmed to cooperate hand in hand to achieve a “free and open Indo-Pacific” as Japan and Mozambique are located respectively at the east and west side of the Indo-Pacific.
  4. The two sides reconfirmed to cooperate toward TICAD8 to be held in Tunisia in 2022, exchanged views on addressing issues related to North Korea, including the abductions issue, and shared views on continuing close cooperation.
