Japan-Ethiopia Relations
Meeting between Prime Minister Abe and the Former President Mulatu of Ethiopia


On October 24, commencing at 04:05 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, Former President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, on the occasion of his visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows. The meeting was also attended by Mr. NISHIMURA Akihiro, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, and others from the Japanese side, and by H.E. Mr. Kassa Gebrehiwet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Japan, and others from the Ethiopian side.
1. Opening Remarks
Prime Minister Abe welcomed the visit to Japan by Former President Mulatu, and stated, “I am very pleased to meet you again since my visit to Ethiopia in 2014”, “I would like to reiterate my congratulation to Prime Minister Abiy for winning the Nobel Peace Prize,” and “I am grateful for the message of condolences from Prime Minister Abiy on the damage caused by Typhoon Hagibis.”
In response, Former President Mulatu congratulated the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor, and stated, “I would also like to express my condolences to damages caused by the typhoon.”
2. Bilateral Relations
Prime Minister Abe stated, “I appreciate Prime Minister Abiy’s attendance at TICAD7 and the Special Conference on the Horn of Africa and the Neighboring Region. We would like to continue the support for the initiatives taken by Prime Minister Abiy toward peace and stability,” “we intend to make projects in Ethiopia including improvement of infrastructure, human resources development, and geothermal energy development.”
In response, Former President Mulatu stated, “I am grateful for the continuous support from Japan to Ethiopia.”
3. Regional and International Situations
Prime Minister Abe sought understanding and cooperation toward the early resolution of the abductions issue. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international situations.
