Japan-Angola Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On February 21, commencing at 16:35 p.m. (local time; 23:35 p.m. on February 21 JST) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Téte António, Minister of External Relations of the Republic of Angola. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan would like to cooperate with Angola as a co-chair of TICAD 9 in August of this year, as Angola assumed the AU Presidency on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its independence.
- Minister Iwaya stated that he intends to further strengthen bilateral relations through Angola's participation in the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan to be held this year, referring to the active high level exchanges in recent years as well as the Japan-Angola Investment Agreement that entered into force last July. In response, Minister Antonio stated that [he would like to further strengthen the bilateral relations including business relations, expressing his hope to promote investment from Japan. :P].
- Minister Iwaya also expressed his hope that direct negotiations between the parties concerned will resume regarding the situation in the eastern Democratic Repulbic of Congo. Both Ministers also concurred to work closely together on international challenges such as response to North Korea, including the nuclear and missile issues and the abduction issue, and UN security reform.
