Japan-Madagascar Relations

On August 20, commencing at 5:50 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Christian Ntsay, Prime Minister of the Republic of Madagascar, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his respect for Madagascar, which chaired the recent Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit, and stated his desire to work together with Madagascar, as maritime nations, to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). In response, Prime Minister Ntsay explained the issues facing SADC and Madagascar and stated that he would like to further strengthen good bilateral relationship in various fields, including a business sector.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA referred to Japan’s support for the Toamasina Port to date and stated that he would like to promote cooperation on natural resources. He also expressed his appreiciation for youth exchanges between the two countries through the technical college. In response, Prime Minister Ntsay expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support as well as his expectations for Japanese companies to promote investment in Madagascar.
