Japan-Burundi Summit Meeting

On August 21, commencing at 4:20 p.m., for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. General Évariste NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic of Burundi, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba, while mentioning that President Ndayishimiye was appointed as the AU champion for youth, stated that “youth” is one of the cross-cutting themes of TICAD 9 and expressed his expectation that young people on both in Japan and Africa would work together to create a better future. He also stated his desire to develop cooperative relationship with Burundi. In response, President Ndayishimiye highly appreciated the efforts of TICAD to date. He also expressed his gratitude for Japan's consistent support and cooperation with the Burundian people even at difficult times, while stating his desire to further strengthen bilateral relationship.
- Following that, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his expectation that the completion of the improvement of the Port of Bujumbura would contribute to facilitation of Logistics flow and strengthening of connectivity of the region. He also mentioned that Japan decided the provision of medical equipment to the national hospital. In response, President Ndayishimiye expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support, including the Port of Bujumbura, and expressed his expectations for further assistance, while explaining Burundi’s priority issues.
- The two leaders confirmed that they will cooperate in addressing various international issues, including Security Council reform.
