Japan-Togo Relations

On August 20, commencing at 6:15 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H. E. Mr. Faure Essozimna GNASSINGBE, President of the Council of the Republic of Togo, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his respect for Togo's diplomatic efforts, including its active mediation between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the three Sahel countries, as well as between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. He also stated his intention to further develop bilateral relations, including in the economic field. In response, President Gnassingbé explained the efforts of Togo toward the reginal stability and expressed his intention to further strengthen bilateral relations.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated his desire to contribute to strengthening regional connectivity through support for infrastructure development of Togo as a regional logistics hub. Prime Minister ISHIBA also mentioned that Jpaan would support the strengthening of Togo's security maintenance capabilities through cooperation with the peacekeeping training center and the provision of vehicles to the police. In response, President Gnassingbé expressed his gratitude for Japan's support to date and his intention to continue close cooperation towards regional stability and the strengthening of regional connectivity.
  3. The two leaders also discussed the reginal situations and confirmed to continue to work together.
