Japan-Sao Tome and Principe Relations

On August 21, commencing at 11:05 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with S.E. Mr. Américo d'Oliveira dos RAMOS, Prime Minister of Democratic Republic of Sao Tome Principe, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that Sao Tome and Principe is a model of democracy, continuing peaceful transfers of power through elections, and an important partner for Japan in the maritime field. Prime Minister ISHIBA also expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations toward the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations next year. In response, Prime Minister Ramos expressed his gratitude for Japan's support including food assistance and his expectation for Japan’s cooperation in various fields.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that Japan would continue to cooperate with Sao Tome and Principe in the areas of food security as well as maternal and child health. Prime Minister ISHIBA also stated that Japan would promote bilateral cooperation in various fields, based on Sao Tome and Principe’s requests. In response, Prime Minister Ramos expressed his hope for further development of bilateral relations, notably economic relations.
