Japan-Senegal Relations

On August 20, commencing at 11:25a.m., for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H. E. Mr. Bassirou Diomaye FAYE, President of the Republic of Senegal, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA welcomed President Faye's visit to Japan. He expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations with Senegal, a strategically important partner brimming with potential and his intention to promote youth exchanges, utilizing the opportunity of Youth Olympic Games. In response, President Faye highly appreciated the role Japan has played in the region and the world and expressed his wishes to further strengthen bilateral relations.
  2. Following this, Prime Minister ISHIBA, referring to Japan's support for Senegal in human resource development and education through vocational training as well as assistance to the Casamance region including mine clearance, expressed his intention to strengthen bilateral relations, including in the economic field, and to cooperate even more closely. In response, President Faye expressed his gratitude for Japan's support in various fields and his expectations for further investment by Japanese companies. President Faye also showed his strong support to the theme of TICAD 9, “Co-create innovative solutions”, proposed by Japan.
  3. The two leaders concurred to further strengthening cooperation in responding to various international challenges, such as the United Nations Security Council reform.
