On August 19 (Tuesday), commencing at 3:10 p.m. for approximately 1 hour, the TICAD 9 Ministerial Preparatory Meeting was held in Yokohama, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, IWAYA Takeshi, attended the meeting as a Co-chair. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated his wish to support the success of TICAD 9. He then explained that, starting on the 20th, TICAD 9, under the theme of "Co-create Innovative Solutions," would create new solutions together to the challenges faced by Africa and the international community, utilizing the strengths of both Japan and Africa.
  2. In response, the African co-chair, H.E. Mr. Edouard Bizimana, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation of Burundi, expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan and the City of Yokohama for their efforts in preparing the Conference. He also stated that the theme of "Co-create Innovative Solutions" will bolster both Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and conveyed his desire to further strengthen the partnership between Japan and African countries through TICAD 9.
  3. Thereafter, H.E. Amb. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the AUC, Mrs. Cristina Duarte, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant-Secretary-General, Director of Regional Bureau Africa of UNDP, Mr. Hiroshi Matano, Executive Vice President at MIGA and a member of the World Bank Group leadership team, all speaking as TICAD co-organizers, made statements. The participants unanimously shared the same view to cooperate toward the success of TICAD 9.
