1 On Sunday, August 28, commencing at 1:00 p.m. (local time; 7:00 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 60 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Nairobi, the Republic of Kenya to attend the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), delivered an address (English / Japanese)at the Global Launch of the Africa Human Development Report 2016: Accelerating Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Africa, hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

2 In his address, Minister Kishida stated that the empowerment of women is critical to the future of Africa and stressed that Japan will continue to contribute to the development of Africa through promoting women's empowerment, in collaboration with African partners and international organizations including UNDP .

(Reference) This side event was hosted by UNDP from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The key participants were H.E. Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya; and H.E. Miss Helen Clark, Administrator of UNDP. The Africa Human Development Report 2016 that was launched at this event analyzes the current situation of gender equality and women's empowerment in Africa, and suggests an action plan required for further progress.
