Japan-Nigeria Relations

On July 18, following the passing of H. E. Mr. Muhammadu BUHARI on July 13, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, issued a letter of condolence to H. E. Mr. Bola TINUBU, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In the letter, Prime Minister Ishiba stated that on behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, he would like to express his sincere condolences to the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Prime Minister Ishiba also commemorated the former President’s tremendous contribution to the development of the partnership between Japan and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including promotion of investment by Japanese companies, touching upon the former President’s visit to Japan and his attendance in the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7) held in August 2019 in Yokohama.

On the same day, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, issued a letter of condolence to H. E. Ambassador Yusuf TUGGAR, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In the letter, Foreign Minister Iwaya expressed his respect for the former President 's great contribution to economic development and the promotion of stability in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as his leadership in regional integration in West Africa and in strengthening peace and stability in Africa. Minister Iwaya also expressed his sincere condolences to his deceased's family.
