Japan- Guinea-Bissau Summit Meeting

On May 12, commencing at 15:45 for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Gen. Umaro Sissoco EMBALÓ, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, who was paying a visit to Japan as an official Guest of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. An overview of the event is as follows.
- Introduction
- Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Embaló’s first visit to Japan for the National Day of Guinea-Bissau at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai held on May 10 and stated that he would like to closely cooperate to deepen relations with Guinea-Bissau.
- In response, President Embaló appreciated the holding of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai and expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received during his visit to Japan and his willingness to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
- Bilateral Relations
- Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his hope that TICAD 9 to be held in this August will serve as an opportunity to co-create solutions that will lead to the prosperity of both Japan and Africa, utilizing Japan’s innovative technologies and know-hows, and requested Guinea-Bissau's cooperation toward the success of TICAD 9. In addition, he stated that peace and stability in Guinea-Bissau is important for the stability of the West African region, and extended his expectation that the presidential election and the National People’s Assembly election in this November will be implemented in a transparent and fair manner. Prime Minister Ishiba also referred to cooperation in the area of food security and stated that Japan would like to further strengthen bilateral relations.
- In response, President Embaló said that TICAD 9 is an important opportunity for Africa's development and Guinea-Bissau places importance on it. President Embaló also stated that he would like to strengthen cooperation between two countries in all areas including economic relations.
- Cooperation in the international arena and Regional situation
The two leaders affirmed the importance of the rule of law and confirmed that they would work closely together in the international arena. The two leaders also exchanged views on the issues such as the situation in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue, and the situation regarding Russia and Ukraine.
