Japan-Equatorial Guinea Relations

On July 18, commencing at 4:35 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Teodoro NGUEMA OBIANG MANGUE, Vice President in charge of National Defense and National Security of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, who is visiting Japan as an official guest of the Government of Japan to participate in National Day event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi welcomed Vice President NGUEMA OBIANG MANGUE’s visit to Japan, expressing his hope that this visit would further enhance bilateral relations, including in economy and business. In response, Vice President NGUEMA OBIANG MANGUE expressed that he was pleased to visit Japan and stated his wish to further strengthen relations in a wide range of areas.
  2. Chief Cabine Secretary Hayashi stated that Japan attaches great importance to the promotion of the blue economy, and from this perspective, Japan is cooperating with Equatorial Guinea in strengthening its maritime law enforcement capabilities to combat illegal fishing in the Gulf of Guinea and to combat piracy and drugs. In response, Vice President NGUEMA OBIANG MANGUE expressed his gratitude for a welcome at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai and an interest to Equatorial Guinea by Japanese people and companies and stated his expectation for further strenghtning bilateral relations including an investment by Japanese companies through this visit. Furthermore, both sides confirmed their cooperation towards the success of TICAD 9 held in August this year.
  3. The two sides exchanged views on regional and international situation and concurred to continue close coordination. In addition, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi asked for Vice President NGUEMA OBIANG MANGUE’s continued understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue, and gained the support.
