Japan-Cabo Verde Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 25, commencing at 6:05 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Maputo (the Republic of Mozambique) to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting, held a Japan-Cabo Verde Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Luis Filipe Tavares, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities and Minister of Defense of the Republic of Cabo Verde. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the beginning, Minister Kono sincerely welcomed Minister Tavares’ attendance at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting. In response, Minister Tavares stated that he feels honored to be able to attend this Ministerial Meeting following TICAD VI, and expressed gratitude for Japan’s cooperation in areas such as food and water supply.
- In addition, the two ministers exchanged views on matters that are of interest to both countries, such as measures for responding to natural disasters.
- Furthermore, Minister Kono stated that Japan will strengthen its relationship with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) member countries by cooperating with Cabo Verde, the CPLP presidency holder who is to serve as next year’s host country for the CPLP Summit. In response, Minister Tavares requested that Japan attends the Summit as an observer.
- In addition to this, Minister Kono and Minister Tavares exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena, on issues including African development and United Nations Security Council reform.
