Japan-Cameroon Relations
Japan-Cameroon Summit Meeting
August 21, 2025

On August 21, commencing at 3:40 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Joseph DION NGUTE, Prime Minister of the Republic of Cameroon, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that Cameroon, which plays a leading role in the economy of Central Africa, is key to regional economic integration, and that Japan would like to support Cameroon’s industries, including agriculture and fisheries, as well as the strengthening of its value chain. In response, Prime Minister Dion Ngute welcomed the recent development of the bilateral relationship and expressed his appreciation for Japan’s assistance to date.
- Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA, referring to Japan’s support for the promotion of rice cultivation and fisheries as well as the implementation of food assistance, stated that Japan would continue to cooperate on Cameroon's food security. Prime Minister ISHIBA, mentioning that Japan has provided assistance in the fields of water and medical care for the stabilization of the southwest region of Cameroon, also stated that Japan would support Cameroon’s efforts on peace building. In addition, he congratulated Cameroon on the success of the International Conference on the Blue Economy in the Gulf of Guinea which was held in Cameroon, and stated that Japan would continue to support efforts to strengthen maritime law enforcement capabilities in the Gulf of Guinea coastal region. In response, Prime Minister Dion Ngute expressed his hope for further promotion of investment by Japanese companies.
- The two leaders confirmed to work together to address various issues at the United Nations Security Council as well as to cooperate on its reform.
