Japan-Benin Relations

On August 21, commencing at 5:30 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ms. Mariam CHABI TALATA, Vice President of the Republic of Benin, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), in Yokohama. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Isihba expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations with Benin, which continues to achieve high growth through strengthened governance, economic diversification, and sound macroeconomic management. In response, Vice President CHABI TALATA explained the efforts toward Benin’s development and expressed her intention to further strengthen bilateral relations.
  2. Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA mentioned that Japan has provided assistance for Benin in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, and education, and announced the decision to provide a yen loan for the improvement of Benin's investment environment, the first in approximately 30 years. In response, Vice President CHABI TALATA expressed her gratitude for Japan’s past support. She also expressed her expectation for further investment by Japanese companies as well as for further assistance from Japan.
  3. Both leaders confirmed their intention to cooperate on the United Nations Security Council reform as well as peace and stability of the region.
