On August 25, commencing at around 9:40 a.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a foreign ministers' meeting with Mr. Aurélien Agbenonci, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Benin, during his visit to Maputo, the Republic of Mozambique, to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows. 

  1. At the outset, Minister Kono wholeheartedly welcomed Minister Agbenonci's attendance at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, and discussed the local government exchanges between the city of Yokohama and the city of Cotonou. In response, Minister Agbenonci congratulated Minister Kono on his appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs. 
  2. Minister Agbenonci expressed his appreciation and expectations toward Japan's assistance in a wide range of fields such as urban sanitation. Minister Kono stated that the Government of Japan decided in July to provide food assistance (grant aid) of approximately 3 million dollars in order to contribute to food security in Benin.
  3. In addition, the two Ministers exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena, including United Nations Security Council reform and the issues regarding North Korea.
