Japan-New Zealand Relations

On July 17, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan held a meeting with Rt Hon Winston Peters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, who is visiting Japan to attend the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders' Meeting (PALM 10). The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Peters' visit to Japan to attend PALM 10, and stated that the PALM10 is an important opportunity to communicate domestically as well as internationally the direction that Japan and the Pacific Island countries are moving together.
  2. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Peters stated that the reception hosted by the Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi and his spouse last night (16th) well demonstrated the trust between Japan and the Pacific Island countries and that two countries will continue to work together toward success of PALM 10.
  3. They concurred to continue to work together to further solidify the relationship of trust with the Pacific Island countries.
  4. They also concurred to work together to further strengthen collaboration among like-minded countries in a wide range of areas, including security and economy, based upon the outcomes of the summit meeting held during Prime Minister Luxon's visit to Japan last month.
