On December 11, commencing at 11:30 for approximately 80 minutes, Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a luncheon meeting with Hon. Mr. Dalton Tagelagi, Prime Minister of Niue, who was visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, State Minister Horii stated that he had been looking forward to the reunion since they last met in the Cook Islands on the occasion of the PIF Leaders Meeting in November 2023, and welcomed the Prime Minister Tagelagi’s second visit to Japan since July of last year. In addition, mentioning that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Niue, State Minister Horii stated that he would like to further strengthen the bilateral relations with Niue. Also, he stated that, including following up on the outcomes of PALM10 last year, Japan will support efforts to enhance regional connectivity and resilience, and will stride forward together with the Pacific Island countries, considering their individual needs.
  2. Prime Minister Tagelagi extended congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Niue and expressed his appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for its cooperation.
  3. In addition, both sides exchanged views on cooperation through the PALM process and regional affairs, and concurred on strengthening the cooperative relations based on reliance and “kizuna”, a bond of trust.
