On May 23, commencing at 2:19 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with Hon. Toke Tufukia Talagi, Premier of Niue, who is visiting Fukushima Prefecture to attend the 7th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM7). The outline of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Abe, noting that this was the first bilateral summit meeting after Japan recognized Niue as a state, stated that he would like to open diplomatic relations with Niue as the fourteenth fellow Pacific Island country, and foster their bilateral relationship ahead. Prime Minister Abe also expressed his appreciation for being able to host PALM7 in Iwaki City currently under robust reconstruction, which set a fitting start of a new partnership between Japan and the 14 Pacific Island countries.

2. In response, Premier Talagi expressed his gratitude for Japan’s recognition of state of Niue, and his determination to strive to develop the bilateral relations. Premier Talagi also commented that he was moved by the warm welcome extended by the people of Fukushima, and highly praised PALM7concluded in success.

3. Prime Minister Abe stated that Japan will continue to provide robust support for the sustainable development of Niue. Premier Talagi expressed his gratitude in response, expressing his determination to take the best advantage of Japan’s support to further the Niue’s development.

4. The two leaders exchanged views on issues and cooperation in international arena including on climate change.
