Japan-Fiji Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 23, commencing at 2:15 p.m. local time (3:15 a.m. on September 24, Japan time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Republic of Fiji, while visiting New York, the United States, to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan and Fiji share fundamental values and principles and are important partners in maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law. He welcomed the successful handover of patrol boats under Japan`s Official Security Assistance (OSA) in June this year and expressed his intention to further strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.
- Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI expressed, based on the concept of the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”, his intention to provide concrete support for the “resilience” and the “freedom to decide for themselves” of Fiji and other countries in the region. Minister Ditoka expressed his gratitude for the past cooperation in a wide range of fields. Both Ministers also confirmed that they will work closely together toward the success of the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11), which is scheduled to be held in Yokohama city in the summer of next year.
- In addition, the two Ministers exchanged views on regional affairs, including those regarding the Pacific Islands countries region. They also confirmed that they will continue to cooperate in a wide range of areas including disaster risk reduction.
