Japan-Fiji Summit Meeting and Signing Ceremony

On November 13, commencing at 5:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, had a Summit Meeting with Hon. Mr. Sitiveni Ligamamada RABUKA, Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, who is paying an official working visit to Japan. Subsequently, the two leaders signed the Japan-Fiji “Lomavata Kizuna Partnership” to elevate the bilateral relations to a greater heights (Lomavata means“unity” in Fijian language). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan and Fiji are important partners in maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law, as the two countries share values and principles. The two leaders affirmed their cooperation toward the realization of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" and concurred to further deepen the “Kizuna” between the two countries.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI mentioned that in recent years, the cooperative relationship between the two countries is progressing across a wide range of fields, including infrastructure, education, health and medical care, disaster prevention, as well as security, justice, and sports exchanges. The two leaders confirmed their commitment to further developing the strong cooperative relationship, guided by the Japan-Fiji “Lomavata Kizuna Partnership.”
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan is implementing cooperation tailored to the needs of Fiji, such as the provision of a disaster response vessel, and expressed the intention to stride forward together with Fiji to strengthen regional connectivity and resilience, including the enhancement of the bilateral economic relations. In response, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for the cooperation in a wide range of fields and demonstrated the commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.
- Furthermore, the two leaders confirmed that bilateral security cooperation is essential for maintaining regional peace and stability, and welcomed the world’s first delivery of the equipment through Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA) in Fiji. Also, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that she would like to continue close coordination with Fiji on the policies to North Korea, including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
- Regarding the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her deep appreciation to Prime Minister Rabuka for his trust in Japan’s efforts, and stated that Japan would continue to respond transparently based on scientific evidence to enhance the confidence in the safety. Prime Minister Rabuka expressed once again his confidence in Japan’s efforts on the discharge.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan strongly supports the regional unity and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) ‘s “2050 Strategy” that embodies it, and mentioned that Japan is steadily implementing the commitments made at the10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) last year, including the contribution of 3 million USD to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF). The two leaders confirmed they would continue to cooperate toward PALM11, which is scheduled for 2027.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that the “Ocean of Peace” declaration led by Prime Minister Rabuka shares the same principles as the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” such as respect for sovereignty and maintaining a rules-based international order. Both leaders confirmed they will work together to maintain peace and stability in the region.
- Both leaders also exchanged views on regional issues.
