Japan-Australia Relations

Japan and Australia will mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia in 2026. We aim to make this anniversary year one of broad exchange between Japan and Australia, with the active participation of local governments, businesses, private organizations, and others.
We are now accepting applications for events and activities related to Japan-Australia exchange, organized by local governments, companies, private organizations, etc., during the period from January to December 2026. Following review, eligible events will be approved as Anniversary Events for the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia.
Details regarding applications are as follows. We look forward to receiving many applications.

1. Eligibility

Events must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. They must take place in Japan or Australia during the period from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
  2. They must contribute to promoting exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding, and strengthening friendly relations between Japan and Australia across various fields, including economics, society, arts, academia, sports, and tourism.
  3. They must not be primarily for profit-making.
  4. They must have clear objectives and content and demonstrate a high likelihood of realization.
  5. They must not be intended to promote specific ideologies, beliefs, or religions, and must not violate public order or morals.

2. Benefits of Anniversary Events

Approved events may identify themselves as Anniversary Events for the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia. They may also use the 50th Anniversary logo on promotional materials (posters, pamphlets, websites, signage, banners, etc.). Additionally, approved events will be listed on the websites of the Embassy and Consulates-General of Japan in Australia and the Embassy of Australia in Japan.

The 50th Anniversary logo is scheduled to be announced in December 2025.

Please note that the email address and application method vary depending on the event location.

Events held in Australia

Please enter and submit the (a) required information for Online Application via the common online application link for the Embassy and Consulates-General of Japan in Australia.

Additionally, please attach (b), (c) and (d) and send via email to the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan in Australia with jurisdiction over the event location. (Reference: Embassy and Consulate-General of Japan in Australia). Please be sure to include [Anniversary Event Application] in the subject line and in the body, state the event name, the responsible person's affiliation and name, and contact information.

Events held in Japan

Please first email the Australian Embassy in Tokyo to express your intent to apply. You will then receive an online application link for submitting the required documents ( (a) – (d) ).

4. Reporting After Completion

For approved Anniversary Events, please email the following documents to the same contact used for application within three months after the event is completed.

5. Points to Note

  1. The review process typically requires approximately two weeks. Please submit your application well in advance. (We may request additional information regarding your application)
  2. We are unable to respond to inquiries regarding the review progress or reasons for the application outcome.
  3. The organizer bears full responsibility for implementing the event. Approval as anniversary events do not impose any financial or other obligations on the governments of Japan and Australia. No financial support or subsidies will be provided for approved events.
  4. This approval is granted solely as part of the anniversary events for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia and does not constitute approval of the content or purpose of the implemented events.
  5. Should any changes occur in events, please report them without delay. If the revised event no longer meets the eligibility criteria, the approval may be revoked. Additionally, if the event is cancelled, please also report this without delay.
  6. Even after approval is granted, if the event is subsequently deemed inappropriate as an anniversary event for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation, the approval may be revoked.
  7. Unauthorized use of the logo, including its use for other events conducted by the organizer or by other organizations, is prohibited.
  8. We may utilize information from the submitted Completion Report in documents that will be released in public.
