Japan-Australia Relations

Japan and Australia will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan in 2026. In order to make this anniversary an opportunity to further develop bilateral relations, various commemorative events will be held in Japan and Australia in 2026. We are widely calling for logo designs to be used in the related events and PR materials.

1. Submission guideline

  1. Submissions are open to citizens of Japan and Australia. Only individuals are eligible to submit. (Note: Staff from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including those attached to missions in either country, as well as their immediate family members, are not eligible. Participants must provide proof of citizenship if requested)
  2. Submissions open at 15:00 hours (Tokyo local time) on 16 September 2025 and close at midnight on 24 October 2025 (Tokyo local time). Late submissions will not be considered.
  3. Please submit your design by email to jpnaus2026@mofa.go.jp and communications.tokyo@dfat.gov.au.
  4. The governments of Japan and Australia will select one winner from the shortlisted submissions.
  5. Results will be announced in January 2026 on various websites including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.
  6. The winner will receive one return economy flight ticket between Australia and Japan, courtesy of QANTAS. The flight is for the winner`s use only.
  • (Note 1) Travel to Australia or Japan is subject to the winner obtaining a valid tourist or other relevant visa, if required.
  • (Note 2) If the winner is unable to obtain the necessary visas to enter Australia or Japan, the prize will be forfeited.
  • (Note 3) The Prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for any alternative prize, including one of monetary value.
  • (Note 4) The winner is responsible for any taxes and surcharges applicable to their flight, securing comprehensive travel insurance for the duration of their trip, and covering all accommodation, food and other expenses associated with their trip (including domestic travel).
  • (Note 5) Usage of the prize is subject to blackout dates and validity as specified by QANTAS. The winner will need to communicate directly with the airline to organise their travel.

2. How to submit your design

Please attach your logo design and completed Entry Form (Word) (including your name, affiliation, and a brief explanation of your logo design) to the specified email above. We regret that we cannot accept submissions via postal mail.

  1. Your logo design should be sent as a PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF or PDF file no larger than 3 MB and with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. (Formatting changes may be requested if necessary.)
  2. The explanation of your logo design should be described on the Entry Form
  3. Please submit both color and black-and-white versions of your design (no restrictions on the number of colors, gradations, etc.). Gradients of colours, contrast and other image elements may be adjusted by the Organiser, including to meet accessibility requirements.
  4. You may submit as many logo designs as you wish.
  5. Submitted logo designs and materials will not be returned.
  6. The logo design should include the country names in both Japanese and English (Note), and “50” to mark the 50th anniversary. It should also incorporate recognizable elements of both Australia and Japan, such as national colours, iconic flora and/or fauna and/or, unique art/design elements from either country.
  • (Note 1) Please insert the country names in both Japanese and English, such as “日豪” or “JAPAN-AUSTRALIA.”
  • (Note 2) The winner may be asked to submit the original file (PSD or AI).

3. Submission of applications (Applications will only be accepted via e-mail.) (Note 1)

  2. E-mail subject line: “Logo design competition for the 50th Anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan”
  3. Attachments: Entry Form, 2 versions of the logo design (both colour and black and white versions)
  • (Note 1) If the number of application emails exceeds the storage capacity of the mailbox, we will temporarily be unable to accept applications at the above address (you will receive a message stating that the message was not delivered). In such cases, please resubmit your application after waiting one day.
  • (Note 2) Please be sure to include a phone number and email address where we can contact you. We may contact you regarding the content of your application.
  • (Note 3) Those selected for the official logo mark will have their personal information (name and affiliation) published on the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia. If you do not wish to have your personal information published, please clearly state this in the body of your email.

4. Points to note

  1. Submitted logo designs must be created by those submitting, must be new-never published anywhere, and must not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, etc. of any third parties.
  2. Submissions that are offensive to public sensibilities, in violation of laws or regulations, intended to promote specific ideologies, political views, or religions, inconsistent with the purpose of the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan, or intended for profit will be disqualified.
  3. The selected design will be withdrawn from use, if it is later found to violate any of these conditions.
  4. The selected design may be modified and processed as necessary for use as the official logo. In the event that the selected design and the applicant do not meet the necessary conditions, or if the applicant does not agree to any supplementary modifications, etc., the selection will be canceled and void even after the decision has been made.
  5. All rights to submitted designs and the copyright to the selected logo will belong to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Those submitting designs agree to relinquish their authors’ moral rights, and the submission of the Entry Form is regarded as constituting agreement to the above.
  6. The selected logo may be withdrawn from use if any information submitted with the design is later determined to be false.
  7. The selected logo design in its final form will be distributed to organizations authorized by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and will be used to promote the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan.
  8. Personal information of those submitting logo designs will not be disclosed or offered to third parties without the designer’s permission.
  9. Receipt of submissions or notification to unsuccessful applicants will not be sent. Please note that we are unable to respond to any inquiries regarding the selection process.
  10. Staff from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including those attached to missions in either country, as well as their immediate family members, are not eligible for submission.

5. Announcement of the results

Results will be announced in January 2026 on various websites including those of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.
