Japan-U.S.-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On October 29, commencing at 7:00 p.m., for approximately 20 minutes, H.E. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visiting the Republic of Korea (Gyeongju), held a Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the Honorable Marco Rubio, Secretary of State of the United States of America, and H.E. Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The three Ministers reaffirmed that, in light of the increasingly severe strategic environment that the three countries face, it remains important to strengthen the solidarity among the three countries, and continue to show the robust Japan-U.S. and U.S.-ROK alliances as well as the strategic coordination of these alliances.
- They also welcomed the advancement of concrete trilateral cooperation through action-oriented discussions by the three countries, building on the joint statement from the trilateral meeting of the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea in September. In particular, they reaffirmed that they would further advance their coordination on North Korea and cooperation in security including economic security.
- The three Ministers discussed North Korea, and reaffirmed that they would further strengthen communication among the three countries at all levels. They also reaffirmed their commitment toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea. Foreign Minister Motegi expressed his appreciation for the continued cooperation from the governments of the U.S. and the ROK regarding the abductions issue.
- They concurred to pursue holding a trilateral Foreign Ministers’ meeting whenever the three Ministers get together, including at international conferences.
