Japan-U.S.-ROK Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On September 23, commencing at 1:30 p.m. (local time, on September 24, 2:30 a.m. Japan time), for approximately 30 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visiting the U.S. (New York), held a Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the Honorable Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States of America, and H.E. Mr. Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The three Ministers first confirmed advancement of the trilateral cooperation globally in a wide range of fields in a year since the Japan-U.S.-ROK Summit held at Camp David, and concurred to further strengthen trilateral cooperation as the free and open international order based on the rule of law is facing serious challenges.
- The three Ministers shared serious concerns about advancement of North Korea’s nuclear and missile activities, including the recent ballistic missile launches, and reaffirmed that they would continue to work closely on measures such as the enhancement of regional deterrence and response capabilities including trilateral security cooperation, responses at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and international cooperation with like-minded countries. Foreign Minister Kamikawa also expressed her appreciation for the consistent support from the governments of the U.S. and the ROK regarding the abductions issue, as confirmed by each minister.
- Furthermore, given the strategic importance of trilateral cooperation, the three Ministers exchanged their views on regional situation, including unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force, and cooperation on economic security. The U.S. and ROK ministers also extended condolences for the incident that one student at the Japanese School in Shenzhen, China, was attacked and killed by a man on September 18.
- The three Ministers concurred that they would continue to advance the robust collaboration among Japan, the U.S. and the ROK, and that they would accelerate their coordination to establish a trilateral coordinating mechanism based on the progress made under the trilateral cooperation, aiming to announcing it at the trilateral summit meeting before the end of the year.
