On July 26, commencing at 2:25 p.m. (local time. 4:25 p.m. on July 26, Japan time) for approximately 45 minutes, Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK), during her visit to Vientiane, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic for the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings. The summary of the bilateral meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that she was delighted to see Minister Cho again, after their meeting in February and two telephone conversations.
  2. The two ministers concurred to continue close coordination between the diplomatic authorities towards next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-ROK relations, so as to foster even firmer and wider-ranging bilateral cooperation in a way that will bring benefit to the people of both countries. The ministers also discussed issues of interest in bilateral relations and affirmed that they would continue to seize various opportunities to exchange views with one another.
  3. The two ministers discussed recent regional and international affairs, and affirmed the importance of Japan-ROK coordination with a view to maintaining and strengthening the free and open Indo-Pacific, and to addressing various international issues effectively, at a time when the international community is at a history’s turning point. The two ministers also exchanged views on the current situation relating to North Korea and concurred on working closely together bilaterally and trilaterally among Japan, the ROK and the U.S. They reaffirmed close cooperation on the abductions issue.
