On February 9, commencing at 11:50 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with Ms. Park Geun-hye, President of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1 At the start of the conversation, Prime Minister Abe stated that North Korea's recent launch of ballistic missile posed a direct and grave threat to the security of Japan and the ROK, and significantly undermined the peace and security of the international community.
2 Prime Minister Abe also stated that in order to curtail such dangerous provocative actions by North Korea, it would be essential for the international community to show a firm response, and that Japan intended to accelerate processes for the prompt adoption of a strong United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution based on close collaboration with the ROK and other related countries. The two leaders agreed that they recognized that it was desirable for the Security Council to respond and take measures in a firm manner as soon as possible. Furthermore, Prime Minister Abe explained that Japan would take its own measures in order to comprehensively resolve issues including the abductions issue, nuclear and missile programs, where President Park praised Japan's initiatives.
3 The two leaders agreed that Japan and the ROK would continue to collaborate closely.
