Courtesy Call on H.E. Mr. Ukhnaa KHURELSUKH, President of Mongolia by Foreign Minister MOTEGI

On September 3, commencing at 1:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Ukhnaa KHURELSUKH, President of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar during his visit to Mongolia.
- Both sides reaffirmed the importance, amid the current international situation, of the 2022 Joint Statement, in which they confirmed, among other things, freedom, democracy, the rule of law and the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP),”. Minister Motegi stated that, based on this philosophy, Japan, as the most important “Third Neighbor” of Mongolia, would strongly support strengthening its freedom to decide for itself and resilience under the updated FOIP. In particular, both sides welcomed that the two governments substantially agreed regarding the expansion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which is key to improve air connectivity, utilizing yen loans.
- Both sides also exchanged views on cooperation in regional and international arena, and concurred on further strengthening cooperation toward regional peace and stability. During the discussion, Minister Motegi, in relation to Mongolia’s “One Billion Trees” National Campaign initiated by President Khurelsukh, conveyed that Japan would complete the five-year afforestation cooperation this year promised in the 2022 Joint Statement, and President Khurelsukh welcomed its accomplishment.
