Japan-Mongolia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 3, commencing at 4:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 60 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Ms. Batmunkh BATTSETSEG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar during his visit to Mongolia.
- The two ministers reaffirmed the importance of the 2022 Joint Statement, in which Mongolia identified Japan as the most important “Third Neighbor” and both sides confirmed, among other things, freedom, democracy, the rule of law and the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP),” and they concurred on the importance of steadily implementing this amid the increasingly fluid international situation. Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan would continue to support Mongolia’s “Third Neighbor” policy, deepen cooperation, and promote cooperation under the Updated “FOIP,” and Minister BATTSETSEG stated that she would continue to support the “FOIP” vision and to take action in line with it. The two ministers shared the view on advancing further cooperation to support strengthening Mongolia’s freedom to decide for itself and resilience.
- The two ministers confirmed that they would continue to actively hold a variety of dialogues between the two countries. They concurred on further discussing cooperation in the security field as well, and, moreover, in new fields such as Artificial Intelligence.
- The two ministers concurred on deepening discussions utilizing the Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee scheduled for November this year, and on further advancing discussions toward the conclusion of a bilateral tax convention, in order to develop cooperation in the economic field.
- The two ministers welcomed that the two governments substantially agreed regarding the expansion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which is key to improve air connectivity, utilizing yen loans. They also concurred on continuing communication toward cooperation under the "Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia (POWERR Asia)."
- The two ministers also exchanged views on cooperation in regional and international arena, and concurred on further strengthening cooperation toward regional peace and stability. During the discussion, Minister Battsetseg stated that she highly appreciates Japan’s long-standing contributions to the peace and stability of the international community as a peace-loving nation. Also, Minister Motegi once again expressed his appreciation for Mongolia’s understanding and cooperation on the abductions issue.
