The U.S. - Japan Cooperation for Afghanistan

The International Conference on Reconstruction Assistance to Afghanistan was held, at a ministerial level, on January 21-22 in Tokyo with the participation of the Chairman of the Afghan Interim Administration, H.E. Mr. Hamid Karzai and other representatives of the Administration. Japan, the US, the EU and Saudi Arabia were the co-chairs of the Conference.

At the U.N. General Assembly in September last year, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, U.S. President George W. Bush, and Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal jointly issued a statement on the construction of the highway linking Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat. The construction work is now in progress at full speed.
